Young people are being helped by the power of two to take their first step into the world of work.

JPR Trade Skills has joined forces with JB Skills training to give school-leavers the best chance of stepping on to the career ladder.

An open day was held at South Shields Business Works – where visitors could find out more about the range of courses and apprenticeships on offer and try their hand at tiling and plastering.

Jimmy Carr, who owns JPR Trade Skills, said:

“Joining with JB Skills Training has given the courses we run a boost. Instead of only learning the practical side, they will also be able to improve themselves academically.

“The time hasn’t been more right for people to learn a construction trade – with the Government wanting more houses built and a lot of tradesmen coming up to retirement age, there will be a shortage of people with the necessary skills.

“Through the courses, we hope the young people coming through our doors will go onto an apprenticeship or even better full-time employment.”

Those taking part in the course will spend six weeks within a workshop setting learning the practical side of plastering and tiling.  They will also spend time brushing up on their maths and English skills before embarking on a six-week work experience placement.

Dan Hardy, business development manager at JB Skills, said:

“Along with the maths and English, we will be looking pre-employment skills including CVs and interview techniques.

“We will also be working on their health and safety qualifications and the completion of their CSCS cards so they are work ready.

“The aim is to help them both academically as well as practically to enable them to gain work in the construction industry.”

The courses are currently only available for those aged 16-18. However, it is hoped from August it will be offered to those aged 19-25 with plans for JPR Trade skills to soon include evening and weekend classes to open up the opportunities to more people.

Anyone who wants information on the courses, or employers interested in offering six-week work placements to trainees, can email info@jprtradeskills.com
